If you are someone who is looking to start some type of work from home business, or even if
you are just a person who has a bit of spare time and is looking for a way to make some extra
cash, a simple arts and crafts business may be your solution. A successful crafts business
can be quite lucrative once you get started, and requires very little upfront capital to begin.
How To Start A Craft Business
Now, this is not to say that running your own crafts business is extremely easy. It’s not. There
WILL be competition, so make sure that you truly enjoy crafts before running off to begin your
own business. With that said, here are a few tips to help you stay ahead of the game and on
your toes.

- Start your business off small; promote your crafts locally. Too often, people immediately
being promoting their business with no prior knowledge of the crafts industry. As a result,
thousands upon thousands of dollars are wasted, and people lose faith in their investment.
You must remember that in the business world, there is no such thing as a get-rich-quick
scheme. You MUST learn the way that the crafts industry operates before even attempting to
start playing with the big boys.

- Go to craft shows often. If you’re running out of ideas or are simply looking for some new
material and ideas, craft shows are your best bet. However, this is not to say that you should
simply just copy the ideas of other people. Think of something unique. A general question you
should always ask yourself before starting a new project is, “If I were the customer, would I buy
this product? If so, how much would I probably spend on it?”

- Make sure that you have a location to store all of your crafts. When you are first starting your
business, you probably won’t have any issues with storage. However, as you begin to receive
more orders and start working with different kinds of materials, you may need to find another
place to store all your supplies. Try to stay away from bulky cardboard boxes as they get dusty
very easily and can be a hassle to look through. A good idea is to obtain some large plastic
tubs, see-through if possible. Tubs act as great storage containers and make your life much
easier when trying to find a certain something.

- If you think that you’ve discovered the perfect craft that is sure to be the “next big thing,” ask a
few friends and family what their honest opinion is before going out and buying all the materials
for your new project. Get opinions on what should be fixed or changed, and figure out ahead of
time what your target audience is going to be so you can make any modifications necessary.

- If you’ve reached the point where you are beginning to go to local trade shows, you should
always plan ahead at the very least a couple of months. If the craft you are making is a based
on Christmas themes, try searching stores for deals on Christmas related supplies during the
summer, as most people are not interested in winter items during that time.
