Chances are you have already seen a sewing needle before. They are very slender and
usually quite long objects of metal with a pointed end that is used for cutting through fabric.
The end away from the pointed end usually has a whole for carrying string and this is what
allows people to sew objects together with their sewing thread of choice. However, did you
Sewing Needle Types
know that there are a number of different sewing needles that can be used for different
purposes? Some of the more common types are listed below.

Sharp Needles: Sharp needles are the basic sewing needles; the ones that you would have
seen had you seen any sewing needles before. They have extremely sharp tips (hence the
name sharp) and in addition to that have exaggeratedly round eyes so that you can get the
thread in easily. These needles are intended for general sewing and even for special purpose
sewing for people that are not advanced in their skill as of yet.
Embroidery Needles: These are needles that are perhaps the least specialized, because you
can actually use them for most of the other types of sewing as well. However, the place where
they are best used would be in embroidery work simply because of the fact that they make it
easier for you to thread different types of thread and yarn through them at once. These multiple
threads are what are used in embroidery work, so these needles are basically sharp needles
with a larger eye section for containing more threads at once.

Detail Needles: These are needles that are very similar to sharp needles, but instead of
differences with the eye portion as embroidery needles have, detail needles are much smaller
in both their thickness and their actual length. This is because detail needles are intended for
very fine work on things like blankets and tailored suits, so the larger needle would do little but
get in the way.

Now, these are the three main types of needles that will be used by people that are either at a
beginner or intermediate level within their sewing skills. Unless you are very advanced and
professionally or semi-professionally taking on sewing work, you should not be using any
needles aside from these three. This is because different sewing needle types can be
expensive (especially when you order them individually) and unless you really need them for a
specific purpose chances are that you will just be wasting money in their use.

In fact, if you are a complete beginner to the hobby of sewing, then you should be able to get by
with sharp needles alone. These are just typical sewing needles that everyone sees on
television and in shows all the time. These needles can be used for any type of sewing
imaginable, but with some types they will be less efficient than their specialized counterparts.
However, if you are a complete beginner and are not sure whether you are going to keep the
hobby or not, you should be very careful about spending too much money on many needles
early on.
