Keeping Memories Alive, which opened its first wholesale division in the fall of 1993, had a
major impact on the growth of the scrapbooking hobby. In addition to making scrapbooking
materials more readily available to scrapbookers, the owner of this company did a number of
things to help further move the scrapbooking industry along.
Scrapbooking Turns Into a Huge Nationwide Hobby
|
Scrapbooking Makes it to Books
One of the other ways that scrapbooking burst onto the scene was with the book written by
Marielen Chrsitensen, the founder of Keeping Memory Alive. She and her husband wrote and
authored a book about scrapbooking together. This book was the first book to provide “how-
to” instructions for organizing family memories and preserving them through scrapbooking.
In addition to the workshops and seminars that Christensen was already conducting on a
regular basis, the books helped to bring the art of scrapbooking to people around the country.
As the concept of scrapbooking became more well known – primarily through word of mouth –
new ideas and twists on the original concept began to develop. As a result, Christensen went
on later to write another book in 1995 that was the first to provide specific ideas for
scrapbookers.
Scrapbooking Meets the World Wide Web
Scrapbooking was well on its way toward becoming the phenomenon that it has become, but
the Internet certainly gave it a boost and made it happen even faster. In 1996, Keeping
Memories Alive launched its website, making it the first commercial scrapbooking site on the
Internet. This site offered scrapbook supplies at reasonable prices, making it easier for those
interested in pursuing the hobby to order supplies for their personal scrapbooks.
Scrapbooking Gets Social
In addition to the books, easy-to-get supplies, and Internet availability, scrapbooking enjoys a
great number of practitioners because of the large social network that has formed.
Scrapbookers from around the country gather together and pre-determined locations on a
regular basis in order to trade ideas, to share memories, and enjoy each other’s company.
As a result, the scrapbooking industry has turned into a multi-billion dollar industry and
increasing numbers of companies are developing and selling scrapbooking products. In
addition, the hobby of scrapbooking has spread around the world. Scrapbookers gather
together in all kinds of places, including at scrapbooking conventions, scrapbook stores, the
homes of other scrapbookers, and even on cruises.
In the United States, scrapbooking has passed up golf in popularity. According to some
statistics, about one in four households have someone that plays golf while one in three
homes have someone that is involved in scrapbooking. The hobby has become so popular that
many hobbyists have turned their love into a business and have started to open their own
stores.
Scrapbooking is a highly enjoyable hobby that more and more people are choosing to do. Not
only is it a great way to maintain memories and to ensure that they remain fresh in your mind
and heart for the rest of your lives, it is a truly enjoyable hobby that can help you create new
friends and new memories.
