It is  a part of fine arts and craft where you can create designs on fabric using needle and
thread…though  it needs a great deal of practice and experience.  You use strands of colorful
thread and also a great deal of imagination to create patterns in your fabric that makes others
stare wonderstruck at your craftsmanship and so too on your carry of fashion.
Embroidery
In Asian countries, particularly in the sub continent people of more than fifty years can be seen
engaged in embroidery, patiently knitting one stitch after another, one row after another and in
a few days or weeks produce a masterpiece… a well knit piece of fabric to adorn their coffee
table or night table… it is seen as a useful way of spending time.

The classification can be of many times depending on the criterion of classification, like the
place of origin of the style, placement of the stitch relative to the fabric, types of stitches used,
placement of the design etc.
And following will be few of the likes…

Free embroidery:
It is where the design is applied to the fabric without regard the weave of the underlying cloth.
Crewel (embroidery using wool) and Chinese embroidery are few examples of this type.

Counted thread embroidery:
The name has been given so because this technique is used to create symmetric or regular
patterns and such designs need careful counting of the strands interleaving the stitches.

Surface embroidery:
This is where the design is made on the surface of the base fabric regardless of the stitch type
with more of free embroidery style used in it. All that is done is, a particular design is woven on
the surface of the fabric.

Canvas work:
This is where you closely knit the fabric mesh with the strands of threads so that the entire
mesh is covered and the fabric is well hidden from the view.

History of embroidery can be traced bask to the ancient Egyptians and all the great kings and
queens, and it was a big part of their costume.  To dress in rich robes was a mark of dignity and
self esteem and power, and also it showed the others of their power and position in the society.
Few examples that can be quoted pertaining this would be the grand robes of Queen Elizabeth
and also napoleon. The queen’s trade mark was those using metallic threads on black velvet.

The vastness of the various designs in embroidery is due to the styles adopted by the people to
suit them and their culture and this is the reason for the existence of some 120 types of
embroidery stitches in India alone.

Now the development of technology has quickened up the pace at which embroidery can be
done, from days and weeks to few minutes. This is possible by feeding the design to a custom
computer synchronized with the knitting equipment. The products obtained are of the best
quality as well and they are produced at a blinding speed.
